i had some time off this week so i decided to take advantage of the extra time and spent some of it alone in the bush. i left Tuesday evening and headed up a place called Rough Ridge. it climbs up from right behind the school. i ride my bike up as high as i could and then stated hiking. i stopped at the first meadow i came to and set up camp. i wasn't exactly going ultra light but i did want to take as little as possible. all i took to sleep with were two wool blankets. i made a nice bed of Douglas Fer bows next to a fallen log and set up a reflector fire on the other side. despite some spitting rain during the night i slept amazingly well.
after breakfast i started my ascent again. the school is a 1000 feet elevation and i made it to the 6000 ft mark! unfortunately i didn't make it as far as i would have liked but the weather up there wasn't so good. i turned around at about 12 noon and after stopping to eat lunch during a good downpour i made it back around 3. it was a very muddy decent :)
it was very pretty up there. they don't call it Rough Ridge for nothing! it is fairly narrow ridge between two valleys and it drops very steeply on either side. and it goes up and up! i was very surprised to find tons of deer trails. they must used it to get down from the high county. there isn't any water up there. i did find one place where some water was coming out of the ground. but it was in a very steep place and went back into the ground a short distance down the slope.
the views were absollutly wonderful! it was worth the effort. the pictures don't even come close!
